set amid an area of immense natural beauty the reflection of the light in a mirror of water created by one of the branches of the alqueva, the regimented rows of vines, the cork oaks and the cypresses lending a tuscan air to the heart of the alentejo. situated beside the alqueva, herdade do sobroso - a five star rural hotel - was born of a firm will and strong sentiment; the will to create a rural tourism property that would reflect a taste for architecture, journeys and being host, and the sentiment of belonging to the land, the alentejo, the wine production at herdade do sobroso – where traditional techniques and local castes of grape, such as the perrum, have been recuperated – and the genuine alentejo cuisine, prepared with local ingredients, some of them, like the game boar and black pig, raised on the estate itself. the farmhouse has a number of areas where guests can socialise, a large lounge with a fireplace and a domed ceiling, a dining room offering a range of delightful delicacies and another, smaller, lounge, also with a fireplace for anyone seeking a special, cosy nook. four lanterns hanging from the ceiling shed candlelight on the access to three of the bedrooms and two suites (on the mezzanine), all different, all pretty and all lovingly cared for. bathrooms in tadelakt and little details like the alentejo blanket folded down at the foot of the bed. a colonial porch stretches the length of the house, with bali chairs, roof fans and moroccan cushions, divine… just right for hot nights and long conversations while sipping one of herdade do sobroso’s fine wines. the junior suites and the master suite with 2 rooms are located in the separate “stork house”, which are perfect for families… just a few steps down is the pool, sheltered and calm, and affording a superb view over the vines and surrounding countryside. appealing on summer nights and welcoming in winter, designed to make us feel truly at home, herdade do sobroso is one of those places that you just never want to leave…
